Cataract Surgery
A Cataract is a clouding of the natural lens in the eye which can impair your vision. Cataracts typically form naturally as you age and are commonly found in individuals that are aged 55 years and older. A cataract can develop in one eye or both and could lead to blindness if left untreated.
Cataract Symptoms
A cataract is a clouding of the normally clear lens of the eye. Some common symptoms of a cataract may include:
-
A painless blurring of vision
-
Glare or light sensitivity
-
Fading or yellowing of colors
-
Needing brighter light to read
-
Poor night vision
-
Double vision in one eye
Although most cataracts are related to aging, this can be misleading. Cataracts can also develop after surgery for other eye problems, such as glaucoma or retinal issues. This can also be an issue for people who have diabetes and/or other health issues. Some babies are born with cataracts or develop them in childhood. Cataracts can develop after exposure to some types of radiation and can be caused by trauma to the eye.
Our doctors at Eye Associates of Tallahassee are available to treat your cataract based on your individual needs. A cataract may need to be removed if vision loss interferes with everyday activities, such as driving, reading, or watching TV. You may need to remove a cataract if it prevents an examination or treatment of another eye problem, such as age-related macular degeneration or diabetic retinopathy. By having your vision tested regularly, you and your eye care specialist can discuss if and when you might need treatment.
The good news, however, is that treatment for cataracts is successful with more than 98 percent of the 3 million-plus cataract surgeries performed each year in the United States are considered successful. While there are several advanced technology IOLs on the market today, the premium lenses we use in our practice include Monofocal, IQ Toric and ReSTOR, using the intraoperative ORA technology to help achieve spectacle independence.
