6 Reasons LASIK is Worth It

LASIK surgery is one of the most popular elective procedures in America. More than ninety-six percent of people who have had LASIK are happy with their results.

That is why hundreds of thousands of people choose LASIK every year. There are a lot of great reasons to consider LASIK for yourself.

Keep reading to learn more about LASIK and six reasons LASIK is worth it!

How Does LASIK Work?

LASIK, also known as Laser-Assisted In Situ Keratomileusis, is a safe, effective procedure in which an eye doctor reshapes your cornea to correct your refractive error. Adjusting the shape of the cornea can correct common vision problems, including astigmatism and nearsightedness.

LASIK is an outpatient procedure that typically takes less than an hour. There is no need for general anesthesia, so you’ll be awake the whole time.

However, your eye doctor will use special drops to numb your eyes so you won’t feel anything. They will also use a tool to hold your eyelids open so you don’t need to worry about accidentally blinking during the procedure.

During the Procedure

Once your eyes are prepped, your eye doctor will  use a specialized laser to make a small flap in the outer layer of your eye, then move it aside to reach the inner layers of the cornea. Then, they will use laser tools to gently reshape the cornea.

Once that’s done, they will return the flap and reposition it over the surface of the eye, where it will heal on its own. There is no need for stitches as the cornea will heal on its own.

Recovery From LASIK

Recovery from LASIK is usually quick and uncomplicated.  Many people report that their eyes felt slightly sore for a day or so but that tends to get better quickly.

You will need to use prescription eye drops and follow your LASIK surgeon’s aftercare instructions to prevent infection. You will be able to return to many normal activities, such as non-strenuous work, within a few days of LASIK.

Most people start to notice vision improvements soon after LASIK. Your vision will continue to improve gradually over the course of a few months.

Why Consider LASIK?

LASIK seems like a big commitment, but there are so many reasons why it is worth the time and money.

1. Clearer Vision

LASIK offer incredible vision correction. Many LASIK patients say they have better vision correction from LASIK than they used to get from glasse or contacts.

Vision after LASIK is sharp and clear, and wont be affected by smudged glasses or dry gritty contacts.

2. Increased Self Esteem

LASIK will improve your vision, but it can also improve your self-esteem. If you feel like glasses are hiding your face, LASIK will let you come out from behind them.

You’ll feel more confident, which can make a difference at job interviews, presentations, or social events. Clear vision without worrying about glasses and contacts might allow you to try new activities and spend more time being social.

3. No More Hassle From Glasses or Contacts

Exercise and travel can be a lot easier when you don’t have to worry about how well you’ll be able to see. No more packing contacts and cleaning supplies or keeping track of a pair of glasses while you’re on a trip.

You can take part in exercise or outdoor activities without worrying about smudged glasses or dry and gritty contacts.

4. Eco-Friendly

Glasses and contacts are made of plastic that cannot be easily recycled. Millions of disposable contact lenses and their packaging wind up in landfills every year.

Getting LASIK also reduces the amount of landfill waste you create by reducing the amount of plastic you discard.

5. Saving Money

Glasses and contact are an annual expense for most people who need them. Contact lenses can cost $120 to $1200 per year. Glasses can cost $200 or more per pair.

If you frost got glasses or contacts when you were 15 years old, you could spend as much as $25,000 by the time you’re 65. LASIK saves you money in the long run.

6. LASIK is Permanent

LASIK surgery permanently improves your vision. You won’t need to get repeat procedures to retain the effects.

It’s a one-time investment in better vision.

Is LASIK right for me?

LASIK  can correct nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism.

Your prescription might not meet the guidelines for LASIK, which is why it’s important to schedule a consultation to ensure you are a candidate.

Additionally, LASIK can’t correct age-related vision changes such as presbyopia. Instead, you may benefit from a different type of vision correction surgery, such as refractive lens exchange.

Your eye doctor will perform a comprehensive assessment and let you know which type of vision correction surgery will work best for you.
