Exploring Careers in Vision Care: From Doctors to Patient Support

The field of eye care is full of rewarding career opportunities, ranging from medical specialists who perform life-changing surgeries to friendly staff who ensure patients feel welcome and well cared for. Whether you’re interested in a long-term medical path or a role that lets you interact directly with patients, there’s a place for you with Eye Associates of North Florida. Below, we’ve organized our careers by the education and training required, so you can see the pathways that fit your goals.

Requires Completion of Advanced Professional Education

Ophthalmologist

Ophthalmologists are medical doctors who diagnose and treat eye diseases, perform surgeries, and provide comprehensive care. Some specialize further, focusing on procedures like cataract removal, LASIK, or retinal surgery.
Education: Medical degree (MD or DO), a 4-year ophthalmology residency, and optional fellowship for subspecialty training (~12–15 years post-high school).

Optometrist (OD)

Optometrists provide primary vision care, including eye exams, prescriptions for glasses or contact lenses, and management of common eye conditions. While they don’t perform major surgeries, they often collaborate with ophthalmologists for more complex cases.
Education: Doctor of Optometry (OD), a 4-year professional program following a bachelor’s degree (~8 years post-high school).

Apprenticeship Opportunity

Optician

Opticians help patients select, fit, and adjust glasses and contact lenses based on prescriptions from optometrists or ophthalmologists. They are crucial in ensuring patients have the right vision correction and comfort.

Education: No college degree is required, and Eye Associates of North Florida covers the cost of the certification program.

Ophthalmic Technician

These professionals assist ophthalmologists by running advanced diagnostic tests, preparing patients for procedures, and supporting minor surgeries. Their work ensures eye doctors can focus on treatment while patients receive thorough care.
Education: Certificate in ophthalmic technology with program costs covered by Eye Associates of North Florida, and on-the-job training.

High School Diploma (with On-the-Job Training)

Patient Services Registration & Scheduling

These staff members are the first point of contact for patients, managing appointments, insurance verification, and overall patient experience. Excellent communication skills are key.
Education: High school diploma required; some employers prefer associate or bachelor’s degrees in healthcare administration.

Revenue Cycle Associate

Revenue cycle associates play a key role in the financial side of a vision care practice. On-the-job training often comes from experience in patient services or clinical roles, where you learn how care connects to billing and insurance. Many professionals in this position also pursue certification in medical coding and claims processing, ensuring accuracy in charging out services and maintaining a smooth revenue flow for the practice.

Surgical Coordinator

Surgical coordinators guide patients through the surgery process, helping schedule procedures, explain pre- and post-op instructions, and coordinate between patients and the surgical team.
Education: High school diploma required; on-the-job training is provided, with prior healthcare experience preferred.

Eye care is a field that offers a wide range of career paths, accommodating many levels of education and interests. Whether you aspire to perform cutting-edge surgeries, provide essential vision care, or support patients in a friendly, welcoming environment, there’s a role that can be both rewarding and impactful.
